Medium Voltage Infrastructure

The transition from Low Voltage (LV) to Medium Voltage (MV) levels is a natural progression for large-scale critical power systems. This approach provides two major benefits: enhanced system reliability and reduced costs for infrastructure deployment and operation.

The MV design philosophy allows for protection of larger load blocks, achieving greater reliability through fewer panels and the inherent operational discipline of MV systems.

Deploying power protection at the MV level also delivers the most energy-efficient configuration. Lower currents at this voltage level enable the use of smaller cables and result in reduced transmission losses.

ZISC – Impedance Isolated Static Converter

The ZISC architecture is built on an isolation line reactor paired with ABB’s advanced power converters. This straightforward yet powerful configuration—enabled by intelligent control—offers unparalleled reliability and class-leading efficiency.

By isolating power converters from the utility grid via the line reactor, ZISC continuously regulates and filters power quality issues such as harmonics and voltage imbalance, without transferring load to energy storage. Load-related events like faults and dynamic reactive power demands are managed by ZISC’s high overload capacity.

While the isolation line reactor and coupling transformer operate at the MV level, power converters and energy storage are maintained at LV, significantly simplifying maintenance activities.
